SPEAKING NOTES FOR INTRODUCING: KEVIN DOYLE
STARS OF SPENCE
DINNER
DATE: JUNE 11, 2015

Good evening Chancellor Silver, President Trimbee, and Distinguished Guests….Congratulations graduates and honorees!

It has been my great pleasure to work with this year’s Star of Spence Street staff honoree, Kevin Doyle.

Kevin personifies The University of Winnipeg’s passion for higher learning and personal achievement.

This is reflected in his dedication to assisting students in his role as the Supervisor in the Computer Writing Lab and Tutoring Centre for Rhetoric, Writing, and Communications.

Kevin has been offering practical advice, kindness, and patience from his desk on the third floor of Graham Hall for more than two decades. Students describe him as a benevolent mentor, a hero, and (in a student’s own words) even a saint. He attends to them with humour and a gentleness that fosters their success.

He is consistently noted for his professionalism, commitment, and compassion by his colleagues and students alike.

Kevin offers sympathetic support to students grappling with their academic tasks. He is generous with his time and knowledge, often working through his coffee breaks and lunch hours to help students from every discipline at UWinnipeg.

A recent scholarship winner credited Kevin for her success, noting he helped her go beyond what she thought was possible.

His assistance involves more than tutoring. He helps students to trouble-shoot technology issues and is a reliable source of information, sympathetic support, and institutional memory. He offers international students an understanding ear and gives sound, compassionate advice to non-traditional students to help them manage some of their daily struggles.

Kevin is an exemplary ambassador of UWinnipeg, and has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to supporting students from all walks of life and diverse disciplines in achieving their educational goals.

The University of Winnipeg recognizes Kevin Doyle as one of its unsung heroes (now “sung” according to students), a true Star of Spence Street.
